– Interviews and Articles

Innerviews: Robert Rich, The Sky of Sound
http://www.innerviews.org/inner/rich.html
Anil Prasad’s Innerviews website features in-depth conversations about music with some very creative artists, and I am honored to be included. It’s a thorough interview, where I got a chance to explore some ideas a bit more deeply than usual.

Pitchfork: Songs in the Key of Zzzz, The History of Sleep Music
http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/9738-songs-in-the-key-of-zzz-the-history-of-sleep-music/
This is a well-researched article about sleep music, which includes excerpts from a long Skype interview I did with the author.

– Out of Print

Little by little, I am allowing certain titles to sell out, without plans to re-print. The music will stay available as downloads, but it’s clear that CD sales are slowing in the face of streaming. Sold-out titles include Humidity, Outpost, Somnium, and just today – Atlas Dei DVD. Almost-gone include Echo of Small Things and Illumination. This year’s Filaments is dwindling, and I will probably also let it sell out. It’s a bit ironic that several of my early cassettes have fetched over $100 on eBay recently, so apparently someone still wants a physical release, but maybe only if it’s rare? It’s a puzzle in these times when listening habits are widely changing, while income streams dry up – not for lack of listeners: Spotify shows that my album Nest has had millions of listens, for example. I remain inspired to perform and compose new music, but this shifting landscape demands a flexible approach. I try to remain flexible, and I really appreciate your support for this very personal music. Never did I expect, when beginning down this path, that it could become a career.

One more little thing, a subtle page on this website offers some items for sale from my studio. I’m simply trying to make a bit of space among an accumulation of four decades worth of gear. Check this page occasionally for updates: https://robertrich.com/about/items-for-sale/
